Australian Horse Racing Intro

Australian horse racing is as much popular as in the United Kingdom or in the USA. Australia is a country with mild climate and due to this Australian horse racing differs from this kind of spot of other countries. First of all, all-weather races are not very much popular because the weather does not really differs a lot during the racing season, so all-weather races are given to harness racing.

Australian horse racing is regulated by the State Totaliser Agency Board. People don't gamble much money on fixed price. Still the situation in Tasmania tends to turn the matter whole way round: if the introduction of the betting exchange will turn out to be successful, anyone will be able to become a punter.

Australian horse racing hurdles differs a little from the European one (namely from UK horse racing): hurdles are smaller and fewer in number. Facilities that are offered for the race lovers are of a very high standard. Australian horse racing is so popular among the citizens and visitors that Horse Racing Carnivals are arranged yearly in Sydney and Melbourne.

Australian horse racing has its own Triple Crown for the thoroughbreds which is run in Sydney. These three races are all held in Sydney:  Randwick Guineas (run 1.6 km), Rosehill Guineas (2 km) and Australian Derby (2.4 km). Randwick Guineas and Australian Derby are run at the same Randwick Racecourse and are held as a part of the Sydney Autumn Carnival in March. Rosehill Guineas race is held at the Rosehill Racecourse also in March.

Another famous thoroughbred horse racing is held in Melbourne on the Flemington Racecourse in November and horses run for 3.2 km. This even is called the Melbourne Cup and is considered to be the major one among all the horse races in the country.
